Our Chat with Elin

Celebrated novelist, Elin Hilderbrand has called Nantucket home for over thirty years. She knows the island's beaches, back roads, and best tables at sunset by heart. We sat down for a cuppa with the queen of the beach read to talk summer style, lobster rolls, local piano bars, and the F&E pieces she reaches for all season long.

FRANK & EILEEN: What most excited you about collaborating on a Nantucket Edit with Frank & Eileen?

ELIN: I have been wearing Frank & Eileen pieces for years, so I was thrilled when they asked me to collaborate. Fashion kismet!

F&E: At F&E, we believe that great style is built around pieces you reach for again and again. What are the essentials you can't imagine living without?

ELIN: A good pair of white pants or jeans, and, during the daytime, jean shorts. I wear my jean shorts until they fall apart!

F&E: Nantucket is as much a character in your books as any person. How has living on the island influenced your approach to personal style over the years?

ELIN: I think for most American women, fall is the big fashion season. But when you live on Nantucket, it's all about the summer. I go out four to five nights a week in July and August, so I am always looking for standout summer outfits. My closet is a burst of color along with a lot of navy and white.

F&E: What does a perfect summer day look like for you, from morning coffee to sunset?

ELIN: I wake up early (in June on Nantucket, the sun rises at 4:30!) and work for a couple of hours while I have my tea. Then I get on my Peloton for 50 minutes, head out to my barre class, and, if I have time, I go for a walk afterwards. Exercise has always helped me focus where my writing is concerned. Afternoons find me by my pool or at the beach, reading and writing in my legal pad, taking a swim and a nap, eating a BLT or on special occasions a lobster roll, taking calls (if I must), and then either getting a shower to go out or staying home and cooking for my kids. My favorite summer night would find me with my friends at a place like Galley Beach as the sun goes down, then heading to either the piano bar at the Club Car or to hear a live band at the world's greatest dive bar, The Chicken Box.

F&E: After publishing your final annual summer novel, you've embraced new creative ventures like book reviewing and podcasting. What has surprised you most about this next chapter?

ELIN: What has surprised me the most is how busy I still am! How is this possible? I have a lot going on in Hollywood and here at home. I'm still cooking for two kids, and I've taken on a host of fun projects, including my podcast, Books, Beach & Beyond, which is now in its fourth season.
