FRANK & EILEEN: What inspired you to move to France and open your acclaimed cooking school and culinary boutique, romantically named The Cook’s Atelier, in beautiful Beaune?

MARJORIE AND KENDALL: Though we're originally from Arizona, we were particularly drawn to the French way of life. We’ve also always found it important to dream big and think outside the box. After years of research, professional work experience, and study—both in food and wine, independently and together—we found a way to take the things we love about the French lifestyle and combine it all into a small family business and brand. We jumped feet-first into founding The Cook’s Atelier in 2008 with the intention of creating a special place that supports the connection between the farmer and the cook—and where people from all over the world could come together, learn to cook, and have a good time.

F&E: Does your work in food influence your clothing choices? What are your go-to pieces?

MARJORIE AND KENDALL: We both prefer to wear natural fabrics and fell in love with Frank & Eileen! We are especially fond of Mary and Rory in linen for casual, everyday wear. During our cooking classes, we put on our favorite F&E button-ups in White and refer to them as our “cook’s whites." They are ultra-comfortable and super flattering—and being in the kitchen with lots of splashes and spills, they clean up very well and always look professional and pulled together!

F&E: Between your culinary school, store, and award-winning cookbook, you and your family have created a massively successful Cook’s Atelier world. Do you have any words of wisdom for women looking to start their own business?

MARJORIE AND KENDALL: We started The Cook’s Atelier with no formal business plan—just a strong gut instinct to create a place that we would love and hoped others would, too. Our best advice is to follow your heart, be true to yourself and your values, and be willing to work hard to make your dreams come true.
